Interventions for the Core Symptoms of Autism
The following advice is adapted from NICE Guideline CG142: Autism in adults: diagnosis and management [http://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/cg142]
For adults without a severe learning disability:
use group-based social learning programmes focused on improving social interaction. For people who find group-based activities difficult, consider an individually delivered social learning programme.
Social learning programmes should typically include:
- peer feedback (for group-based programmes) or individual feedback (for individually delivered programmes)
- discussion and decision-making
- explicit rules
- suggested strategies for dealing with socially difficult situations.
Note: Facilitated communication should not be used.
